Up the Network

Aria from this week's 'Social Networking the Opera'
Ok, I realise it has been ages since my last posting. Such are the difficulties of a professional blog: not all the personal stuff that has happened to me of late is relevant to this blog; and, when it comes to client work, well, writing about their challenges isn’t necessarily appropriate.

In any case, earlier this week I attended an unusual networking event for comms professionals held in Clerkenwell, put together by Matt from London Communicators and Engagement Group (aka UpTheNetwork on Twitter). [I don’t normally accept invites to events that originate from online professional groups. Sites like Linked In are excellent for finding and grouping people by interest, although sometimes you occasionally feel like you are on the receiving end of poorly engineered campaigns of self-promotion (or worse spam).] Am glad I made an exception and accepted the invite for this event.

The very entertaining Jason Buck from Long Dog did an excellent job at marshaling his group. We saw “Social Networking the Opera”, some incidental cabaret, even a workshop using characters from the British Carry-On films (you had to be there).

Jason cut an interesting figure as MC and sort of host. The results were quite frankly, entertaining and informative. #UpTheNetwork is their hashtag on Twitter.

Not all networking events are like this. But they should be.
